The Tokyo Toilet

Info & Locations: The Tokyo Toilet

The Tokyo Toilet Project quietly redefines what public architecture can be. Scattered across Shibuya, these small buildings were designed by some of Japan’s most influential architects — yet they don’t demand attention. Instead, they reward noticing.
Each toilet is distinct, but what connects them is a shared belief: that even the most ordinary infrastructure deserves care. Materials, light, transparency, and context are all considered. Some structures dissolve into their surroundings; others deliberately contrast them.

What we love is how these buildings change the way you move through the city. Suddenly, a walk becomes an architectural itinerary. You start looking for form, shadow, and intention in places you’d usually ignore.
If we were showing these to a friend, we wouldn’t frame them as “design objects.” We’d simply say: look how Tokyo treats the everyday. It’s a subtle but powerful insight into the city’s values.
